Simple Summer Skincare Tips for Dry Climates

Simple Summer Skincare Tips for Dry Climates

If your skin feels extra dry, tight, flaky, or irritated once summer hits, you’re not alone!

A lot of people associate dry skin with winter, but here in Arizona (or any other dry climate,) summer can be just as hard on your skin.

Between the intense heat, dry air, sweating, sun exposure, air conditioning, and constantly washing off sunscreen or dirt, your skin barrier can end up feeling depleted fast.

I’ve personally noticed this already this year. Even though it’s only May, our Arizona heat has already started drying everything out, including my skin. I've noticed my kids' faces are extra dry, too.

And I don't know about you, but I always felt like store bought lotions only helped temporarily. I found some relief but as soon as I washed my hands, they were dry again. It always felt like lotion just sat on top of my skin and never really absorbed and definitely didn't truly nourish my skin.

So today I wanted to share a few simple things that help support dry skin during hot weather, especially in dry climates.

Why Skin Gets So Dry in the Summer

Summer dryness usually comes from a combination of things.

-Sun exposure

Too much sun can damage and dehydrate the skin barrier

-Dry air

Dry climates often have extremely low humidity. That dry air pulls moisture from your skin throughout the day.

-Air conditioning

Moving between extreme outdoor heat and air conditioned homes, cars, and stores can leave skin feeling stripped and dehydrated.

-Sweat + frequent washing

Sweating itself isn’t bad, but constantly washing your skin, using harsh soaps, or over cleansing can remove your skin’s natural oils faster than your body can replace them.

-Lightweight water based lotions

Many conventional lotions are mostly water with fillers, preservatives, and synthetic fragrance added in. They can feel moisturizing at first, but often evaporate quickly without giving lasting nourishment to dry skin. Plus, the artificial ingredients don't do any favors for your skin.

Simple Summer Skincare Tips for Dry Climates

Here are a few things that have helped me personally. especially living in the Arizona desert.

1. Focus on supporting your skin barrier

Your skin barrier is your body’s natural protective layer.

Its job is to help hold moisture in while protecting your skin from outside irritation.

When we constantly strip, scrub, over exfoliate, or overload our skin with products, it can become stressed and depleted.

Healthy skin usually starts with:

  • nourishment
  • protection
  • hydration
  • consistency
  • simple ingredients

2. Stop Over Washing Your Skin

Hot weather naturally makes us want to shower more, wash our face more, and constantly rinse sweat or dirt off our skin.

But over cleansing can actually strip away your skin’s natural moisture barrier.

When that barrier becomes damaged, skin often starts feeling:

  • dry
  • tight
  • flaky
  • irritated
  • sensitive

Especially during summer, gentle cleansing and avoiding harsh products can help your skin stay more balanced.

3. Dry Skin Doesn’t Always Mean You Need MORE Products

I used to think I needed MORE products to help moisturize more.

But sometimes dry skin isn’t asking for more products, it’s asking for better support.

Many people end up layering product after product trying to “fix” dryness, but irritated skin often responds better to simplicity.

A simple routine with nourishing ingredients can sometimes do far more than a shelf full of products.

4. Many Lotions Can Leave Skin Feeling Dry Again Quickly

A lot of store bought lotions are primarily water based and contain fillers, alcohols, synthetic fragrance, and preservatives.

They may feel moisturizing at first, but they often wash off easily and don't actually nourish, leaving your skin feeling dry again not long after.

That temporary feeling of moisture can sometimes make people feel like they need to constantly reapply products throughout the day.

5. Simple Ingredients Are Best - in my opinion :)

During summer especially, skin is already dealing with:

  • heat
  • sweat
  • sun exposure
  • chlorine
  • dry air
  • extra washing

For many people, overloaded skincare routines can make stressed skin feel even worse.

I personally love simpler skincare products with ingredients I recognize and trust.

That’s one of the reasons we make our products with grass fed tallow, simple oils, natural botanicals, and pure essential oils.

6. Moisturize Immediately After Washing

Apply your products immediately after washing your hands or showering. This helps lock in residual moisture.

Healthy Skin Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

One of the biggest things I've let go of is the idea that skincare needs to be a million overwhelming steps or products.

Now, I focus on

Simple routines.
Natural ingredients.
Consistent care.

I hope this inspires you to do the same. Sometimes less is more and honestly, I think it's a really beautiful thing to return to the simpler things, in skincare and in life.
