Tallow vs Lotion: What's the Difference?

Tallow vs Lotion: What's the Difference?

Have you ever felt like you have to keep re-applying lotion throughout the day? You get temporarily relief but then it doesn't last or as soon as you wash your hands, your skin feels dry and tight again?

That was me, for YEARS! I tried so many lotions that claimed to heal my dry skin and nothing ever worked. I naturally have dry skin anyway, and have always lived in dry climates, so to say it has been a struggle is an understatement.

And when I started my healthy living journey and began looking at what we're putting ON our skin, it became even more difficult to find something that was truly clean that actually worked.

So when I used tallow for the first time and my skin actually felt nourished, I was HOOKED. As I looked into it more, I realized there's a big difference between products that temporarily coat the skin and products that truly support and work with your skin.

Why Many Conventional Lotions Only Feel Moisturizing Temporarily

Most conventional lotions are primarily made with water.

In fact, many lotions contain:

  • water
  • fillers
  • preservatives
  • stabilizers
  • synthetic fragrance
  • alcohols

Because water and oil naturally separate, lotions also require emulsifiers and preservatives to keep them shelf stable.

That doesn’t automatically make every lotion “bad,” but it's also not necessarily good for your skin either.

Many lotions feel moisturizing right away because of their water content, but once that water evaporates or you wash it off, your skin can often end up feeling dry again quickly.

That’s why many people find themselves constantly reapplying lotion throughout the day.

Why Tallow Works Differently

Tallow is different because it’s compatible with our skin.

Beef tallow contains fatty acids that are similar to the oils our skin already produces, which means our skin can actually recognize it and therefore utilize all the great benefits of beef tallow.

Because of this, many people find that tallow:

  • absorbs beautifully
  • supports dry skin
  • helps skin feel soft longer
  • doesn’t just sit on the surface
  • works well for sensitive skin

Instead of feeling watery or temporary, tallow feels rich, supportive, and lasting.

For me personally, it feels like it actually helps nourish my skin because it's absorbing instead of just sitting on the surface.

Our Tallow Simplicity Mission

One thing I love most about our tallow skincare specifically, is how simple it is.

Our Whipped Tallow Cream and Tallow Balms are made with just three ingredients:

  • grass fed tallow
  • jojoba oil
  • pure essential oils (or none for unscented)

That’s it. No long ingredient lists, no synthetic fragrances, no fillers.

We specifically chose jojoba oil because it works beautifully alongside tallow.

Jojoba oil is unique because it also closely resembles the natural oils our skin already produces.

It’s lightweight, gentle, and works well for many different skin types.

When combined with tallow, it creates a product that feels smooth, silky, and deeply nourishing while still absorbing nicely into the skin.

Why We Use Essential Oils Instead of Synthetic Fragrance

Scent is one of the things people notice most about skincare products, but this is one thing a lot of people aren't aware of:

Many conventional skincare products use synthetic fragrance blends, which can contain dozens of undisclosed ingredients under a single word like “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label. These ingredients can be harmful to our health in many ways.

That was something I became much more aware of when I started paying closer attention to products we use in our home and on our skin.

So instead of synthetic fragrance oils, we choose to scent our products with pure essential oils.

We love that essential oils come directly from plants and allow us to keep our ingredient lists simple, natural and intentional.

And for those who prefer no scent at all, we also offer unscented options.

Why We Hand Render Our Own Tallow

Not all tallow skincare is made the same.

One thing many people don’t realize is that a lot of modern tallow products are made using pre-rendered tallow purchased in bulk from large suppliers.

And while that may work well for some businesses, we personally wanted a more hands on and intentional approach.

We start with locally sourced grass fed beef suet and slowly render all of our tallow ourselves here in Arizona.

Many large scale pre-rendered tallows are heavily processed, refined, deodorized, or bleached in order to create a very neutral, ultra white product with little to no natural scent.

Our goal has never been to create something overly processed or stripped down.

We want to preserve the quality and simplicity of real tallow while creating products that still feel clean, smooth, and enjoyable to use.

By rendering everything ourselves in small batches, we’re able to control the entire process from start to finish:

  • sourcing
  • rendering
  • whipping
  • pouring
  • labeling
  • packaging

We care deeply about knowing exactly what goes into our products because what we put on our skin matters.

Benefits People Often Notice When Switching to Tallow

Everyone’s skin is different, but some common things people often notice when switching from conventional lotion to tallow skincare include:

  • skin feeling hydrated longer
  • needing less product
  • softer feeling skin
  • less tightness or dryness
  • simpler skincare routines
